Right-hand man?

Filed under: Body Language Analysis — Body Language Lady @ 2:45 pm

I am constantly reading academic research on body language. I have been
blogging the last few days about side by side walking and today I read
academic research that indicates that when couples have the same dominant
hand, females will walk so that the male’s dominant hand is holding hers.
Here is the abstract of that original research.

Richard J. Borden1 and Gorden M. Homleid1

(1) Department of Psychological Sciences, Purdue University, 47907 West Lafayette, Indiana

  1. Abstract this study examined the way in which heterosexual couples arrange themselves while walking together. In same-handed couples, significantly more females were on the males’ preferred (dominant) side than expected by chance — especially when the partners were touching. Apparently, handedness and lateral positioning combine to reflect a male-dominance tendency in this type of situation. In opposite-handed couples, males and females put their dominant sides together, especially when touching. Social implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are also discussed.

Reads on Courtney and David, Nick and Vanessa, Jennifer and Marc, Gwen and Gavin, and Halle and Gabriel for US Magaine here!!
I will be reading the following photos for Life and Style magazine
this week. The issue should be on the grocery store newsstands on
Wednesday. The photos show a emaciated and tense Angelina and a none-too-happy
Brad. She has gone from grounded and confident body language to unbalanced
and fragile. For more details on Brad and Angelina check out my read in Life
and Style.

I get asked to do all sorts of interesting things for the media. Here is a
project I consulted on for Men’s Health Magazine. Yes, I helped men figure
women out!

Things that make you go “hmmmmm”….

Yesterday I blogged about side-to-side walking. This, “on the same plane”
walking is something I also notice in couples. I also notice the absence of
side to side walking. Memorial Day evening I attended a party on the front
lawn of someone’s house; (there was a jazz concert across the street in a
park, thus the front lawn advantage). We got to the party early so I was able
to watch the couples arrive. I observed which couples walked up
side by side and which one had one mate trailing behind and then I watched
the couples for the rest of the evening. It was so interesting to see how
the couples who arrived side to side smiled more at each other and touched
each other more and eventually sat side to side facing the concert. I
noticed how the couples who arrived with one member trailing often spent the
rest of the evening apart and did not smile as much at each other. This
doesn’t always predict happy couples but definitely showed couples that
would be happy together for the evening.

“The Yearner”-Side sleeper and reacher. (British research says it used by 13 percent of sleepers) People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front are said to have an open nature but can be suspicious and cynical. Whose side are you on?

Filed under: Body Language Analysis — Body Language Lady @ 8:32 pm

I was out for an evening walk with my friends the Taylor’s.
Their four year old little girl Sissy was riding on her scooter and her dad
was riding on his. No matter how many times we warned her to stay behind him
and not go out in the middle of the road she sped up so she was riding side
to side with her dad. What is that about, in regards to nonverbal communication?

Well side to side walking is body language that communicates that you are not only
that you are equals, but that you are connected as a unit. Sissy is daddy’s little
girl and she likes being right beside him. Sure enough even after she was
punished for going on in the middle of the road and had her scooter taken
away for part of the walk, when she got it back, she was right there in the
road again riding by her dad. And when she was scooter-less again and her
big sister was walking beside her dad, she cried and ran up and stood
between them. When we are connected to people we naturally walk side to side
with them. If you have read some of my blogs about gender differences you
know that men work together better when seated side by side. It creates
comradely and mimics the side by side in battle posture. But I have noticed
that women like to walk side by side. There is a discussion of this behavior here.

Sleep position Wednesday…

Filed under: Sleep Position Series — Body Language Lady @ 7:01 am

The Womb- Fetal position (British research says 51 percent of women and 41 percent of all 1000 people surveyed sleep in this position) On your side curled up. The symbolism is that of a baby in the womb- So People that sleep in this position would have the innocence and unaffected personality of a child. If they are hugging a pillow they need a lot of love and support. They are sensitive and trusting. They tend to see the world as full of goodness as if they are wearing rose colored glasses. They are friendly and social. They give support. The ones who bring the birthday card for everyone at the office to sign and a sense of community is important to them. They long for what they had in the womb, security warmth intimacy. They give joy to others.—if the position is tightly curled up it may show a small degree of insecurity if you suddenly take on this on as a new position could show stress and need to return to the womb. On the DISC it is known as the get along personality style.

Sleep position analysis….

Filed under: Sleep Position Series — Body Language Lady @ 7:36 am

If nonverbal communication is more honest because it is under less conscious control, what could be more revealing than the position we take on in our sleep.? The secret messages of our sleep positions can reveal your true waking personality style. Here are the most popular sleep positions and what the research says it means.

The Spaghetti Noodle

Lying on your side-Stretched out– British research done in 2003 by Professor Chris Idzikowski say it is used by 15 percent of sleepers: not curled up or stiff limbed with arms at your sides, but rather relaxed and stretched out. They are calm, peaceful and steady. They are easy going and do what is expected of them. They want to be liked and to be part of the group; not driven or aggressive. Some research says people who sleep on their side with their right arm stretched over their head are said to be blessed with power and fortune. On the DiSC it is known as the get along personality style.

Look for more positions and researched explanations on Wednesdays!

Truth in Action

Knowing that I have analyzed hours of tape of the presidential candidates
for Psychology Today and analyzed the Republican Debates for FOX and
Friends
, people have been curious who I think the most honest candidate is.
Without hesitation, Giuliani. He definitely shows that
synchronous flow of feel show say body language.
He didn’t do well in the debates. He was not his typical energetic confident
self. In fact, many of the candidates in the Republican Debates look tired.
Not exactly a nonverbal trait that instills confidence.

Just now I read the body language of Nicole Kidman with her children and
compared it to Katie Holmes with Nicole’s son Connor, for OK! Magazine. It seems Katie is taking care of Nicole’s children for her. Interesting body  language. Katie really adores Nicole’s son Connor. I will show you the photos here after the piece comes out. Nicole was definitely warm and confident with her daughter in the photos, so there is no need to call in child services. It is just interesting.
